MASTER CLASSES

For established fiddlers looking to refine their performance, Shawn offers 1–3 private sessions focused on bowing, emotion, and technical efficiency...
Presentation: Refining entry into the musical space through physicality, bowing, and interaction with the instrument, audience, and accompanist.
Artistic Delivery: Developing techniques to communicate musical ideas clearly and effectively.
Expression: Exploring ways to access fiddling's varied emotions and uncover the psychological and emotional heart of the music.
GROUP CLASSES/WORKSHOPS
Shawn will teach tunes from his home region, the Potomac/Allegheny Highlands, emphasizing West Virginia bowing. These "stately pieces" connect to central West Virginia traditions with a unique charm.
The bowing style is more complex than typical old-time workshops. Expect a departure from prescriptive rules into a style absorbed from traditional mentors like Pat Skipper, Elmer Rich, Grover Broadwater, Joe Coe, J.C. Hollis, and Larry Rush, where improvisation and personal expression intertwine with danceability.
